The meeting made an important contribution to the upcoming ECOSOC Annual Ministerial Review on the theme “Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to education” and brought together senior regional practitioners and experts to identify integrated approaches and concrete policy measures that ECOSOC can promote to accelerate progress on the international education goals.

Panelists and experts examined approaches to use universal primary education as a powerful driver to eradicate poverty, reduce child and maternal mortality, promote gender equality, and ensure sustainable development. A special session showed best practices and new initiatives from across the region.

The ECOSOC meeting provided an opportunity to discuss innovative approaches and policy responses that have worked to address multiple barriers as multiple combined forms of exclusion, lack of access to education and the poor quality of the education. The meeting, was held in conjunction with the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), and included a ministerial working lunch to identify policy options and key messages from the region to be brought to the July 2011 ECOSOC AMR for the action of Ministers.
